| Wet Weather Winter Tyre Test MIRA 2011 10ºC |
|
Following on from the somewhat "lively" debate on the topic of using Winter tyres all year round on this thread:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic75222.html
In Nov. 2011, Autocar tested Michelin Winter & Summer tyres at the MIRA facility when the ambient temperature was 10ºC.
There's a good technical explanation from Michelin as to why the Winter tyre took 7.1m or 14% longer to stop in the wet braking test compared to the Summer tyre.
The Winter tyre redeemed itself by giving significantly better grip and feel on the wet handling circuit. Here's the link:

You can watch the video via the above link or at youtube:

Reading the comments on the video (via Autocar's site not youtube) it would seem that the Winter tyres outbraked the Summer at 4ºC. Which was to be expected, but I was surprised by the change around at 10ºC (the temperature this afternoon in Portishead).
Oh, forgot to add Autocar have also conducted a six month test using Summer & Winter tyres on a 4X4 Mini:

Some hilarious comments on the Mini test.
