| EGRs should i change or not |
|
Looking for some advice really. My 57 has covered 70k mostly long journeys and has not had the EGRs changed. no sign of them going but reading this forum it sounds like the dreaded black smoke day may not be too far away at 70k. Should I change them in anticipation of them going soon or wait a bit longer?

I run a 57 with similar mileage...I had one go just before end of 3rd year, so was changed under warranty. Asked Iain (10forcash)  ..he who knows all things d3... a similar question. His advice was 'if it 'aint broke, dont fix it'  as some go , some don't , so my other is still original & still OK.
Now i've said that , it will probably go tomorrow 
You could always try cleaning them as there are threads on here about cleaning sprays that seem to help TDV6 SE Zermatt Silver

Not so worried if they go when i am in the UK its just i take the caravan to France so dont want to curtail a holiday there.
I think I will change them in the next 12 months.

Changing them is no guarantee that they will not fail! If you are so concerned about them failing take two spares with you at least that way should they fail you can get them fitted.
My advise is leave them while they are ok and mix 2 stroke oil (low ash semi synthetic) with diesel at the rate of 200/1, this will clean the soot/carbon/oil deposits off the valves particularly effective on a long high speed run, will also improve starting, economy, lubricate fuel system and make the engine run quiter. It can when others can't,

I have changed both of mine, (2007) but only because they failed.
I understand your concern, but if they do fail, then you only need to find a garage and have 2 x 2p peices to temporarily block the EGR pipe. This will work fine to get you through your trip with no detrimental effects.

But perhaps buy some as spares

If you're going to change anything preventatively I'd put a new intercooler hose on. Mine just went at that age and mileage and gives smoke / engine management lights / horrible performance. Pete Bell sells stronger ones although mine was done on extended warranty so it's just the standard part.

Yup..done that one here too Intercooler hose is an easy swap & well worth it
Done France in mine 3 times now with it not missing a beat. Will be 4th time this year..there i go tempting fate again TDV6 SE Zermatt Silver

I blanked mine off despite the fact they were working perfectly well, purely because I have seen first hand the mess they make of an inlet manifold after a few miles. The manifold becomes completly covered in thick black gunk and carbon. In my mind the best way to prevent this is to blank them off, so that only fresh air is drawn through the manifold not a mixture of air and red hot exhaust gas.

I would love two EGR valves, alternator, turbo etc...under warranty but who's to say the new ones will last longer than 48k? Nothing broken so going to leave as is and cross everything
